Acupuncture

Dr. Douglas is a certified veterinary acupuncturist and is very interested in treating back and lameness problems with this modality. Chinese veterinarians developed treatments and points to use for various syndromes hundreds of years ago, reflecting the value of the horse to their society. The use of dry needling, electroacupuncture and aquapuncture (the injection of various solutions into accupuncture points) has been proven to stimulate chemical responses in the body that lead to endorphin release and pain control. As with humans, some respond very well, even miraculously, and other horses do not appear to respond. Experienced acupuncturists agree that is often because the right point sequence was not found or treated. Please plan to commit to a series of 4 or more treatments of 20 minutes. The animals often sigh, yawn and appear semi tranquilized when the needles are in. We look at this modality as one more important option we can give to you and your horse, and it may be well worth a try when conventional methods have not worked well – or you can use it concurrently!
