Internal Medicine

Horses suffer from a variety of infectious and organic diseases. We are often called upon to diagnose medical problems and illnesses that are not surgical. These often need a detailed workup including blood counts, biochemistry, rectal exam and endoscopy. Much of this we can do at our in house lab. More in depth work might be needed such as abdominal taps and cell analysis. The list of infectious diseases continues to grow, for example West Nile Virus and Equine Protozoal Myelitis are threatening the horses in this area. Recurrent uveitis is a severe eye disease that is on the rise because of the prevalence of Leptospirosis (a bacteria spread by deer). Please ask us about diseases in the area, how to avoid them and where to access information – we have excellent resource material including web sites to share with you.
