Caesarian section can be performed as an elective or emergency procedure. Many breeders request an elective Caesarian for bitches with known whelping problems or if they have a high risk breed such as a Bulldog. The veterinarians would be glad to discuss the criteria and procedure for elective Caesarian with the serious breeder in order to arrive at a mutually agreeable time and maximize safety to the pups. In many cases, the C-section is carried out under emergency conditions, often due to a malpositioned pup. We call in a veterinary assistant to help with the anaesthesia and surgery, and will perform an ovariohysterectomy on the bitch at the time if the owner requests it.
